City Developments Limited and Newport Residences

City Developments Limited (CDL) has been in property since 1963 and calls itself Singapore’s trusted property pioneer. Listed on the Singapore Exchange and among its larger companies by market capitalisation, it holds a portfolio of homes, offices, hotels, serviced apartments, student accommodation, retail malls and integrated developments. By the figures in its brochure for this project, it has developed more than 53,000 homes and owns about 23 million square feet of gross floor area in residential, commercial and hospitality assets, across a network of 168 locations in 29 countries and regions.

Newport Residences Design Team

Founded in 1900, Nikken Sekkei ranks among the largest architectural practices in the world. Its work includes TOKYO SKYTREE in Japan and Shanghai Greenland Centre in China, and in Singapore the practice prepared the Rail Corridor masterplan. For Newport Plaza it set out to make an urban hill: a tower wrapped in cascading gardens and sky terraces that brings greenery back into the Anson Road streetscape.

ADDP Architects, the principal architect, carried the master plan, orientation and views, the night lighting, the green features behind the Super Low Energy rating and the unit mix. Ecoplan Asia designed the landscape across the roof garden, the sky terraces and the four sky gardens.

How Newport Residences Came to Anson Road

The site carried the Fuji Xerox Towers. Its redevelopment as Newport Plaza came under the URA’s CBD Incentive Scheme, which gave the new tower a 25% uplift in gross floor area for adding homes and serviced apartments to the financial district, and Newport Plaza received its BCA Green Mark Platinum Super Low Energy certification in 2021, according to CDL. Newport Residences is open for sale.
